A private client appointed Spatial Design Architects to design and create a forever contemporary family home in replacement of their dilapidated home in one of the most idyllic locations in Bishops Stortford.
Our clients did not want a traditional home, they had many ideas that we condensed into a feasibility design study, the brief grew as the feasibility was developed and a basement was included. Our clients wanted a house that totally interacted with the garden from the main family spaces, and they were happy for the guest’s bedroom and ancillary spaces to be facing the road.
A long linear design was chosen, allowing the large open plan space to interact with the garden via a full 3m tall, glazed façade, with pod spaces at either end, creating a study and TV room. The first-floor family bedrooms and guest rooms by glazed roof lights above the landing that floods natural light into the centre of the house.
The brief was extended once more to include a triple garage at one end, located opposite the only possible entrance into the plot, due to the 4 No. large, protected Horse Chestnut trees. A third-floor entertaining space with a roof top terrace was also requested.
The design moved on and materials studies were undertaken, the first-floor render and cladded panels were to sit on contrasting brick podium, that provided a beautiful contrast in texture and pattern. The third floor was to be cladded in concrete linear Oko Skin panels, this provided a further contrast and sat back from the main house facades. Oko Skin was allocated to the first-floor cladded panel zones for design continuity.
A large two-storey curved staircase allowed access down to the basement for the enjoyment of their cinema room and gym. Our clients installed a slide from the open plan living space into the cinema room, that truly makes this house something different.
