Designing and building a structure is a complex process and one that requires multiple experts and teams. If you want your project to run smoothly, you must manage all the various components and ensure the teams are all working together. Here are five tips to help it all work out.
All teams must have communication if they’re to understand what the other is doing. This means you need to set up a method of communication, such as Slack or a message board where everyone can post updates. Be sure everything is seen by the team leaders and then they can spread the news to their team and talk to each other about their own changing roles in the project.
Make sure you have frequent check-ins with everyone involved in the project. This could be daily with the team that is currently working and then weekly with the others to ensure everyone stays up to date.
No one benefits from having unrealistic deadlines. You should be aware that no project runs smoothly, so plan ahead for the extra time. Set realistic deadlines but leave some wiggle room for the inevitable issues that will arise.
While you may be managing multiple teams, don’t try to micromanage. After all, that’s why you hired the experts in each area. The architects, builders, finishers, etc. will all do their best work when given the guidelines and ideas you need incorporated, but then let them create. There’s a good reason to allow them to work, since they have studied the many aspects of their particular part to play.
If something goes wrong, it’s usually best to speak to the client directly and ensure they are kept informed. Small issues that can be remedied without any changes to the budget or end project aren’t a problem, but it’s never a good idea to hide things from the client. If you’ll need a bigger budget or have to make some design changes to the project in order to make it work, then the client should hear it sooner, rather than later. This is essential, as you can compound issues by waiting.
