Architectural Solutions From Your Local design practice.
If you’re looking for a reliable and professional team of architects, choose Spatial Design as your RIBA Chartered Architects Practice. We work tirelessly to achieve the client’s brief and create an informative relationship from beginning to end.
Founded in 2002 by Brendon Robins, Spatial Design Architects are an Award-Winning RIBA Chartered Practice, specialising in contemporary architecture. Based in Brentwood, Essex, and surrounded by the Metropolitan Green Belt, we specialise in creating unique homes, larger-scale residential & mixed-use schemes, as well as community sector projects.
In 2012 Spatial Design Architects obtained its RIBA chartered practice accreditation. This demonstrates to clients and the construction industry in general that our practice is committed to design excellence and customer service. We have been recognised for our work through various awards - both nationally and internationally. Our work is mainly UK-based, generally focused on Essex, Kent and London but we have enjoyed working internationally, across Europe and South Africa.
Our studio is a beautifully converted piggery located in the conservation area of Great Warley, Brentwood. The open-plan studio is an expression of the attention to detail that we bring to all our projects with the interior designed for a relaxed, invigorating, and productive workspace. It also creates a comfortable meeting environment to discuss client projects in greater detail with all parties.
Located in Brentwood, we love where we work with Thorndon and Weald Country parks within walking distance and the views of London skyline on our doorstep. We are perfectly positioned with easy links to the M25, for good access to the north and south, and A127, A12 in minutes for access to the east and London. With Southend Airport and Stansted Airport just 30 minutes from our base, we are also perfectly based for international work.
Once a week we organise and take part in a CPD (Continuing Professional Development) these inspire the practice by sharing our own designs and inspirational projects, it also ensures the practice is up to date on materials and technology, and allows us to test and be confident in the materials/products we use. We also invite relevant Accredited external consultants / manufacturers into the studio to provide presentations on how their products can be used and detailed and includes new products.
Our Services include feasibility studies, concept designs, drawings, and information for planning submissions, building regulations approvals and tender documentation. We also provide onsite contract administration services up to client handover. These are available individually or collectively as a complete project solution.
All projects have minor or major challenges. Our experience and creative problem solving find an answer either with design or by navigating bureaucracy! We have also successfully completed sensitive category projects within conservation areas and greenbelt zones and have worked within the constraints of listed buildings and their sites.
We pride ourselves to engage and understand our clients’ desires. We create a brief that denotes all requirements and enriches the projects potential, and this is the start of producing a final building that all parties are proud of. Always striving to provide a service that enables you to fully understand the process of your project from our initial consultation through to completion and final handover.
We understand that design is subjective and that some clients want one or the other or sometimes a mixture of both in terms of contemporary and traditional form.
We love taking on a challenge with contemporary architecture illustrated through our past projects of both residential and commercial builds. Take a look at our portfolio for a little inspiration and understanding of our architectural design skills.
We are passionate about making your project experience an enjoyable one and about creating innovative designs, and that all starts from the agreed brief, fee proposal and your understanding of Spatial Design Architects ‘Plan of Work’.
We strive to provide a service that enables you to fully understand the process of your project from our initial consultation through to completion and final handover.
Spatial Design Architects adhere to the RIBA Plan of work:
Spatial Design Architects understand fully that we are not the end user, homeowners and building occupiers are the end users, albeit a new one-off family home or a developer creating multiple units.
However, we always want the design process and the project management of the process to involve our clients and we have designed, detailed, and delivered projects with client’s constant involvement and client’s minimum involvement, we adapt to our clients’ requirements.
We bring value to you that goes beyond simply owning a high-quality contemporary house. We create places where memories are made, that nurture relationships and that bring joy. Our designs connect with nature and offer intangible qualities – such as reprieve from a busy world, or a feeling of being ‘home’.
The relationship between architect and client is extremely important, and we place great significance on rapport and engaging on a personal level.
As architecture goes, the one-off house is the most rewarding building we can work on. We love the direct relationship between our clients and the houses we design. What we love even more, is how we can transform the way clients live, and the difference we can make to the quality of their lives. We always aim to make a difference to urban environments with our larger multi-occupancy developments.
Design | Spatial Design Architects have earned a widespread reputation for the high calibre of its work. Our design approach responds to each individual project with extensive research with the initial site analysis, 3D surveying technology giving a great base model for any project. We offer client discussions of what could be achieved and often via project feasibility studies on larger developments. We design all new developments and houses with minimum National Described Space Standards’, and we also have great knowledge of the London Plan and Secure by Design Requirements, with one of our recent projects being nominated for a Secure by Design Gold Award. For nearly 20 years Spatial Design Architects have designed many projects and many high-end interiors, we are members of ‘The Society of British * International Interior Design’.
Detail | Spatial Design Architects focus on creating a brief with our clients before work commences. We then focus on what creates architecture, design, form, and function, whilst making sure we connect with planning departments and adhere to local authority planning policies and building regulations legislation. This allows our designs to be open for discussion, evolve and be successful, whilst maintaining the attention to detail we are renowned for.
Deliver | We are always looking at ways to inform our clients, with micro design sessions including all project consultants i.e., planning, ecology, acoustic and structural & mechanical & electrical engineers. Our long-established core design principles and practice philosophy are always enriched through our project design stages and via delivering projects through our full-service enriched expertise and experience through to completion and handover.
After gaining his RIBA Chartered membership at The University of Greenwich and undertaking extra curriculum studies simultaneously to the RIBA qualifications in Urban Design and Practice Management it was no surprise that Brendon had met his passion.
Best known for being a decisive and competent leader, always encouraging each team member to develop into a skilled professional. Most importantly Brendon has set up a practice that delivers great architecture, while still maintaining a great atmosphere and fun studio to work in.
When he’s not running Spatial Design Architects?
Brendon has undertaken various FA Coaching badges and coaches his son’s Great Danes Youth Football Team; Spatial Design Architects also sponsor the team. He can either be found relaxing with his family, playing golf, building Lego with his son, supporting West Ham United and taking Boba out for a walk. Day to day, he is always influenced by 'off the wall' architecture that delivers spectacular spaces and is inspired by Architects such as Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Santiago Calatrava and Bates+Masi.
From Spatial Design Architects founding, Brendon knew that he wanted to create a company to pave the way for Architectural Practices.
"It has been a pleasure working in and for Spatial Design Architects, something I intend to do for many more years to come."
Growing up, John has always had a passion for drawing in detail, which then led him to study at Anglia Ruskin University graduating with a Bsc (Hons) degree in Architectural Technology.
Having over 12 years’ experience on projects within the UK and abroad, John has a wide range of experience, which includes large scale developments, listed buildings, traditional and modern contemporary architecture, landscape and interior designs.
Working closely with clients he always strives to achieve designs which are not only aesthetically pleasing but are durable, sustainable, efficient, practical, and functional. Liaising with all members within the initial and greater design team.
John brings innovative and new ideas on projects from conception through to completion. He ensures the most suitable construction techniques and materials are proposed and that the designs are fully co-ordinated throughout; attending sites regularly to inspect the work and review construction progress.
Inspired by the work of Italian architect Carlo Scarpa and the way in which he uses modern methods and spatial concepts to carefully balance the historic with the new architecture. John has always been influenced and fascinated by the ratios and geometric rhythms from classical architecture.
Outside of work John has an array of hobbies, from fishing, mountain biking, go-karting, climbing, kayaking, paddle boarding, golf, traveling and his newfound love for triathlon swimming. Not forgetting in the winter months, a trip to the mountains for snowboarding is a must! So, ask for his autograph now as he might be competing in the Olympics one day?
Since joining Spatial Design Architects in November 2014, Shaun developed his architectural design, detailing and construction knowledge through multiple completed projects following all stages of the RIBA Plan of Work. Alongside working at Spatial Design Architects, he has recently achieved his RIBA Part II qualification completing a master’s degree at University of Westminster with distinction.
Shaun’s love of architecture came from a fascination of problem solving, designing and 3D modelling. As a result of this he has designed and fabricated his own 3-Axis CNC machine and 3D printer which is pure genius., This will not only realise his own personal creations but additionally allow the practice to create precise, stunning architectural models. Shaun also provides the team and clients with photorealistic renderings for their projects to aid in the design process virtually.
When he’s not at the studio, and being a keen car enthusiast, there is nothing he enjoys more in his free time than getting his hands dirty and tinkering. Whether it’s restoring a classic or fixing his own car. Other hobbies include fishing, golf and general DIY.
